Ok I have listened to the comments, and have incorporated some strong natural light this time and have boosted the exposure a tad and gotten rid of the noise in the background. I have still to get a piece of white card to hold and get rid of the small shadow under my chin, but what do you think. Is this an improvement?

Once again this image when hosted by photobucket has lost some of it's warmth????????????

John this is another lovely portrait. The slight glare/reflection in the glasses is gone and all else looks bloody good to me. The only niggle, and I say niggle, because we are aiming high here, was the eyes (i think the first seemed sharper in the eyes, but I could be wrong here) and then I figured out what was missing an even catchlight in your left eye (easily fixed in PS). apart from the fact I liked the hat as a character prop, it's a terrific portrait John :) No keeping down good looks and talent
cheers

Photobucket seems to have lost your hat as well this time

I didnt mind the first portrait either,

first thing I look for though is sharp eyes
I noticed that catchlights in the eyes didnt seem as sharp as the other image.

I thought the hat was important too. made the first one stronger in my opinion. almost like you are missing your trademark this time around.

good even lighting though

Steve

Very nice portrait John.

Yes, there are a few tiny areas for improvement. However, these are noticed after the shoot not at the time of the shoot.

As a result I reckon you've done masterfully well. A self portrait has to be one of the most difficult things to do. I won't even attempt it!!!

Looks great to me John - I'm sure you could teach us a lot about portrait shooting judging by this shot!

Thankyou for all the nice comments, now I feel able to tackle other family members  Oh and Birdie the secret is to hang out with people younger than yourself

great shot John...... but shooting someone wearing glasses is always a pain, as I have shot a few in my time. The changes I would try would be to lower the light a little, move it more off to one side for a lot more modelling, and add a reflector...... the down side here is be careful that the reflector does not reflect in your glasses, the same as moving your head up will pick up a flash reflection ...... the shadow under your chin adds a little modelling to the shot......... you could add a light behind you on the background to give a little separation of subject and background....... then add a hair and shoulder light and a side kick......and you thought this was easy.......

Hi Oneputt :D ,

I also liked the first portrait, and the hat. This one is also a great portrait, which as I have learned is very hard to do.
