My Very First Waterfall Shots...

PostPosted: Wed Apr 12, 2006 8:17 pm
by Trieu
Hi everyone :), this is my first post so I hope I get it right....
I am pretty new to photography and already have fallen in love with it....
I had the chance to visit Hobart for work and while there JohnD and I visited Mt Field National Park and here are two of my very first shots playing with the exposure times and using a tripod.
I learnt so much over the weekend!
Take a look and let me know what you think? how could I improve the shots? ANY FEEDBACK IS GOOD FEEDBACK
Got my Canon 350D/Tamron 18-200mm lens in January 2006 and lovin' every moment I am out there taking shots!!
Thanks again JohnD for taking me :)

trieu:

I read the properties from the post and went to your smugmug galleries.
I can see the small and medium version of shot 1, the large one though, I cannot see. dont use smugmug so suggest might be a permission thing??
perhaps one of our smugmug users can help

Image
this is the image in question.
I can see it no worries as a medium size. note that it shows up in the post now.

I am guessing that you can see images in your first post??
if so that suggests it is something to do with user permissions in your smugmug gallery

paul: out of curiosity, try browsing to http://trieu.smugmug.com
and going to the gallery manually.
I have no issues seeing the pix then. not the large though

Trieu, the 2nd shot is a ripper. Love it :D I think the 1st is a bit "busy" in teh foreground area with the branches drawing attention from the waterfall.

might be worth starting a new thread titled something like "smugmug help" or similar in beginners section and outlining the issues. many users here are with smugmug and they should be able to help.

G'day,

Can't see the images in the thread but can cut&paste them into a browser and that works OK.

Went to your site and can see all versions of the posted waterfall shots...

I'll post a link to them and see if they come up for me...:

Doh, I just realised I didn't leave feedback on your shots, sorry...

Tassie, I can't wait, I'm going there for a few days Anzac day week-end :)

I *MUCH* prefer the second shot out of these two, mainly because of the angle and foreground interest in the rock, which is well placed...

- Lower angle made a much more interesting use of the scene for me
- Good strong foreground interest in the rock in the left cnr
- The part of water coming in from the right hand edge is awkwardly placed in the frame though, I seem to looking up that water and out of the frame... Might be just me :)
- Maybe one step to the right and framing more of that right hand side water out of frame and getting more of the water behind the foreground rocks into your subject?
- Careful with your exposure in PP, some of the highlights in the water seem to be edging on blown...
- Oh, I always wet the rocks and moss in the foreground too, as it brings their color alive... Good tips for waterfalls, bring waders and a bucket to splash water on rocks and stuff :)

Just trying to offer feedback, love waterfall shots and I enjoyed these, cheers...

Trieu, I like both these shots of yours, but especially the second one. I checked them out from your smugmug site. I'll give you a call at work tomorrow and we can talk thru what is going on and why they aren't displaying.

As Andrew said, splashing water around helps with making the rocks look wet. Shouldn't have been a problem though, seeing it was raining most of the time. And that wasn't the only thing that was wet. Mountain stream water is suprisingly cold, especially the third time you go up to your knee in it.

Cheers
John

mmm I see ALL of them :?:

And I like them both.

The 2nd I think would be better if you cropped out the upper part of the fall? It looks abit 'busy'. Great fuzz on the water thou :D

When using SmugMug, you need to make sure that you give people the ability to view the "large" versions of your images. To do this, goto:

Gallery Tools > Customise Gallery > Originals (set to YES) and Larges (set to YES)

Also, make sure you have "Ext Links" set to YES.

To display the large images in your posts:
- click on the thumbnail which will open the larger image.
- If it is not the full-sized image, click the "O" at the top, which will change the view to the "original" sized image.
- Right click this image and select properties - copy the URL and then paste it into your dSLRUsers post...

Hope this helps.... :)

it occured to me that with all the image issues, I forgot to comment on the images themselves.

I like the second, but feel like I want to see the fells which are cut off at the top.

perhaps if you tilted up slightly to get both falls.

you need to be a little careful when shooting shots of falls like this, there can be a tendency to blow the whites.

still pleasing shots for a first attempt.

Second shot is my pick, the water does not seem to be blury enough compared to other shots I have seen, maybe a even more slower shutter may of help, no expert myself :D

Steve, I took some shots that show more of the falls. I'll post them over Easter.

I agree though, Trieu has done an excellent job with these shots.
