I went for a mountain biking ride around Nundle State Forest yesterday to get some toadstool pics, as I reckoned the recent rain should have brought out the Fly Agarics (Amanita Muscaria), which are plentiful up there most autumns.

They have a range of red/orange colours, depending on how long they have been up and how much sun they get, here are a few of them:

Gordon - a fascinating subject well captured. Many years ago I was into toadstools and I used to draw them - why I never took photos I will never know

these are the only amanitas I see regularly.
very common in pine forests as seen by the pine needles in your shots.

would like to see a death cap. apparently a few grow around the ACT.
scarey things fungi. as well as attractive.

I've got hundreds of fungi photos of K25 and Velvia, of lots of different species, some of which I never did ID... but I have some better reference books now so should dig them out some time.
After a dry early autumn here, then 2 lots of recent rain, conditions are ideal for the fruiting bodies to appear, so I might have to head bush again in the next few days and see what I can find.

I feel like there should be a fairy appearing from somewhere !? They really are photogenic fungi !!!

I'm assuming they are poisonous????

rel, these are from the amanita family of fungi.

these are towards the bottom end of the poisonous scale form a family that boasts the death cap and destroying angel.
these are supposed to make you throw up etc unlike most of the other amanitas which will kill you.

As a general rule any mushroom with a cup is poisonous. you cant see the cups in these shots but if you dug them up, they would be there.

They do have a poisonous component which apparently can be reduced by heating, which converts it to another component that ...well best to read about it yourself
