For this shot, perhaps a shallower DOF or sharper viewing angle of the sign would have improved it..Just a thought.

By a sharper viewing angle, you mean, less front on? More to the side or top or bottom perhaps?

Yeah...perhaps you could have knelt down and gotten all of the graffiti in for example. And the reason why I suggested shallower DOF is because the sign leads your eye to the background which doesn't have much in it.
