I know the DOF is too shallow and you can see part of this child's face not being sharp, but somehow I like this photo.
Taken with Nikkor 50 mm f1.4 1/90, f1.7, iso1250. Only slight curves and very slight sharpening by saving for web using bicubic sharper option.
Comments will be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't think the dof is too shallow as you can see his eyes are sharp. I am quite drawn to them and think they are the focal point. I don't find the fact that part of his head is cut off annoying but the bright balls(?) are slightly distracting.

G'day mate,
The narrow DOF makes the viewer concentrate their attention on the child's eyes, which is exactly what you want...
The narrow DOF also reduces the attention on the brightly colored balls in the background... Hmmm, wonder if it's worth doing a de-sat on the background???
Big beautiful eyes, I think it's a great portrait and I can see why you'd like it...

Thanks a lot, guys. I will try to desaturate the background.

I like it overall and agree with other comments.
Maybe the number of highlights (7) on each eye is a bit distracting also.

Thanks, Vincent.
I prepared a partially desaturated version, but I think I still prefer the coloured one.

Alex - I prefer the colour shot - maybe just a little dodging on the brightest balls to tone down the effect? Just an idea - I agree with you though - love the focus on the eyes

Thank you, Rel. Will try to reach a compromise in partially desaturating the background.

Excellent portrait - I too prefer the colour image. You've done well and PP excellent, for such a high ISO, there is minimal noise.

Great shot Alex - I prefer the colour version and see if you can do something about the highlights in his eyes. 7 dots is a bit creepy....a bit like a spider

I like the second image, definitely draws more to the face than to the coloured balls.

I love it, Alex - both the coloured and the desaturated look. The DOF is spot on in my opinion. Well done. Its a wall hanger.

the differential focus is great and the colours too, perhaps just recrop and centre the head

Hi Alex,
The picture is very well captured. Nice and sharp. Good control of dof. Only 2 things you need to work on for this one. The background is too distracting. The primary element are the boy's eyes not the background. Use some software to remove the noise.
You have improved lots.
regards,
Arthur

DOF great
colour background good
angle looking down on child, I don't like looking down photos.
Facial expression Sorry I don't like it it is neither happy or sad.
Maybe if I knew the child but as an impartial viewer it does nothing for me.
My option would be get down low and play with the kid smile of cry any simple emotion or expression get him to lie on his back on the ball if you have to try, different angles.
cheers Doug
