and finally, the only shot where it was impossible to clone out people, modern trains and/or overhead power lines.
This one was taken at Newcastle station whereas the rest were taken at Maitland (which has no electrified lines)

er, not at all!

I prefer this set more than the first :D

#1 - the steam burst makes it! The rivets in the overhead bridge add a complementary element to the image.

#2 - you know I'm being picky as I know what you're capable of... this image is slightly weakened by the shadow being cast on to the engine. The angle is good, but an impression of speed would create quite a powerful image.

#3 - fantastic! My favourite in this set.

#4 - I like this as it's a world of contrasts - you've got steam power under electrification, and a steam engine which is inherently thought of as dirty glistening against one of CityRail's finest in the background :)

#1 and #3 are excellent! Trains are notoriously difficult to photograph and you seem to have worked through that and found a technique that works. I would have loved to have seen the classic train shot....a low angle of a steam train in the distance coming around a curve in the track with steam and smoke billowing from the funnels. Good work. Also, black and white works well with this subject.

And perhaps a touch of canvas texture to lift the detail? :D :D :D

Thanks Matt & Daniel

Daniel - I'm picky too - the shadow really pissed me off, bit I had no choice - it was either shadows of lots of people or the signal box.

Matt - next time I'm going for a shot like you say - I even have the spot worked out. As for "a touch of canvas texture to lift the detail?" you'll have to show me your technique
