Playing with 50mm 1.4 at the beach (4 images)

Was trying out low apperture shots at the beach the other day. Good colour and texture on offer.
Also wondering if this "style" has a specific name.

I'm sorry I don't know of any name that encompasses low aperture shots.

I like these and I love my 50mm1.4 as well! It's a top lens and one which I really should pull out more often than I do.
That's agorgeous looking beach too, Steve. You're lucky to have such a picturesque stage on which to strut your stuff.

Really liked the composition on these.
As for a name, I think selective focus is more the style - where you exaggerate the focus by using a large aperature.

I quite like the first and the last ones ...
The second pic seems out of balance with the focus being on the nearest rock formation ... perhaps going up a few stops to have all the rocks in focus but keeping the waves soft and fuzy would have been a little more balanced ...
I'm looking forward to my 50mm arriving ... been on order for a few weeks now grrrrrrrrrrr....

I personally feel that with a selective focus shot that the subject and contrast differential need to define the shot. Of the shots presented the last shot has this approach where the ”in-focus” part of the photo has real definition against the contrast of the background and foreground.

I totally agree. Very fast and sharp. I love the ability to create a mood using the "low apperture" but also at F16 it takes very nice landscape stuff as well.
I have had a few problems with back focus in dark light (parties, etc), but I guess nothing is perfect.

Woah, that last one is definately the stand out here... The narrow DOF works very well here, making your subject stand proud, excellent...
The others don't seem to have the same level of subject to background seperation...
