A couple of snaps from the Memphis Zoo. This Cat became quite agitated when he looked down my lens. I suppose looking down the lens enlarged my eye but his hair was straight up on his back.

looking or locking eyes with any big cats is sign of agression. it means that you are challenging their territory.

some poeple even say if you close your eyes slowly a few times, pretending asyou are going to sleep. you can make the big cat sleepy, though have never try it...

by the way it looks like the focus was in somewhere in the body.

it may be that the cat there saw its own reflection on your UV filter (if you have one fitted) There's more chance that the reflection would be clearer than the image of your eye viewed in reverse through the camera.

what shutter speeds were these shots?

The second photo looks like General Grevious from Star Wars 3. Both pics are fairly out of focus though, not sure if it was a focussing issue or a shutter speed issue.

The cat's eyes said to you all! great capture of his/ her wishes = your D2x and the lens. lucky you didn't give way!

byrt_001-focus was on the body unfortunately. My preference are tack sharp eyes with some depth but you have to react sometimes

elffinarts-no UV filter, 70-200 VR with only a hood attached. Not sure of the shutterspeed but I'll look into and let you know.

PiroStitch-a bit of slow shutter which I actually like for the movement but I do we wish the eyes were sharper

Eye contact with a creature like a big cat is priceless in an image and these are brilliant... Yeah the focus is behind the eyes but you could probably just select the eyes and sharpen 'em up a bit with some agressive sharpening just on the eyes... The eyes have a nice solid black border so you should be able to get away with some strong sharpening there...

This cat is very threatened and I can sense it in the image, great stuff... Those eyes stopped me in my tracks, I can only imagine what it would have been like to be there at the time... Isn't it great when you catch the moment...

Hmmm, wonder if cropping closer in might help, especially in the second?
