Exercise in Style - "Street Candid"

I chose this theme because I know that it is confronting for many members here... Either in terms of the ethics of it or just plain having the nerve to do it...

The aim here should be to capture the essence of a person or a small group of people on the street or in a public place without them realising that they have been photographed.
Just to make it more challenging, there is the extra rule that the subject must not be known to you nor taking part in any form of organised event!!!

Submissions valid between 1-31 May 2006

THE RULES:

IMPORTANT: There are no prizes. This is not a challenge. It is an exercise...
1. All members are urged to participate with photos taken in the current month
2. All makes and models of camera accepted, FSLR, DSLR, P&S, pin hole, MF, LF
3. All method of Post Processing (PP) allowed- unless 'theme' states otherwise
4. Only one (1) image per member
5. Submissions valid between the 1st and last day of the month.
6. You may do more PP after posting your image
7. First person who posts an appropriate image gets to choose theme for next month
8. Have Fun !!

Excellent bloody idea John! I really hope we get the same response as last months (which was great!!). While I enjoy street candids and have been slowly training myself to be better at it I'm definitely interested in other peoples attempts in this genre!

Suddenly I feel the need to buy a 600mm lens.....

Good topic! Certainly will be a challenge for me, but looking forward to 'aving a go.

Inspirational topic as it is not something i would normally attempt.

Perhaps i can set up a "hide" somewhere in the Manuka shops.

What about Telopea Park (spelling) ? Civic or Wooden wouldn't be too bad either!

Excellent choice Mr Leek and one which has this particular member shaking in his boots.

I spent several years doing surveillance for a certain government department and couldn't guess how many feet of film I must have shot during that time. Since then, candid street photography is not a style I naturally gravitate to, perhaps 'cos I did it for a living for so long, but I'll try to dust off the old trade-craft and see how rusty I am.

Well, it's not a comp but there are some seriously excellent candid st photographers in our midst...fortunately this one isn't a comp, cos I know I'd not have a chance in hell to win it if it were a comp.

... and there are (rightfully) no winners. Otherwise I'd have a nice trophy in recognition of my stunning SP effort

Guess im stuffed.... Street Candids..... in the 11 months ive had my D70.. i havent once attempted a street candid.. just doesnt feel right... self concious i think... doesnt help looking like ive just crawled out of a swamp half the time..

If I Can.. ill make an attempt, I do look forward to seeing other members images.. even tho i personally find it hard to do, I always like seeing peoples views of captured life in the moment..

Hmm, time to dust off the Tamron. With the 1.4x TC, it's 420mm. Didn't think I'd be using it again until next Summer.

Not sure if this is something I personally would do - probably not - don't feel 'right' about taking a shot of someone when they aren't aware, and then posting on an international forum..... an intentional invasion of privacy to me

If the photo is not demeaning to the person in any way, then this is a very legitimate form of photography...

I realise that it might be challenging for some, but that's why I chose it as a theme. We are here to learn...

Did I mention that there were extra brownie points for using a 50mm lens or less???

I'd like to submit my photo of Leigh posted to the other PIW thread, taken with a 12mm lens set to closest focus (28cm).. lets just say he was blinking because he thought there was an impact imminent http://www.moz.net.nz/image2/leigh.jpg

That's the whole shot, just converted from raw and sharpened a little. Canon 30D, 70-200/2.8 @ f/4, one of the Nikon staff at PIW.

(edit, yeah, sorry, they're from before the contest so they're not eligible, but I can't delete them since people have already replied).

And here's one I'm sure you can identify with:

I'm posting it because it complies with the 50mm limit, and I like primate photos. It's sharp full size, 1/30th f/3.5 handheld at ISO 500.

The shot of leigh is great, makes me think he's a pirate! Arrrh!

Great topic and a REAL challenge for me but im willing to give it a go.

I'll even attempt it with my 50mm 1.8.


Very nice Sheila, what lens do you usually use for this kind of photography. A mixed bag or do you have a favorite one?

This shot was taken with my Canon 135 f/2 (with Zigview angle finder). I do have a Canon 300 f/4 L IS which is ideal for candids but its is just too big to carry in my Crumpler bag.

Here is a street pic I took a while ago at NYE, not sure if I needed to take it in May 2006.

The photo should be taken between the 1-31st of this month Nosh, but I'd say keep them one there and post a second when you've taken on within the given timeframe. (Not sure where NYE sits for organised events.. )

A quick snap of a lady getting a drink from the bar. Flash dropped down a few stops as to not 'ruin' the natural light coming from the door way.

My first response was going to be: "Nice shot Mark but I was expecting her to burst into flames at any moment."

Your fire shots are good but, IMHO, they don't do much to illustrate your photographic talents. There was a particularly striking POTW back there somewhere that had little to do with fire engines...

Not entriely satisfied with the PP here, I might try it a few different ways. I'm not normally a fan of borders, but this image needed one as otherwise it just melted into the page.

I think it looks great! PP looks OK to me and I think the border works well.
