Offshore Powerboat Challenge
I went along to the Newcastle leg of the Australian Offshore Powerboat Challenge today and here are my favourite images so far. This finally gave me a chance to practice panning shots and it was harder than I thought.
The next round of the offshore powerboat challengs is on in Botany Bay Sydney on 14th and 15th May. All images are with 70-200 VR. To see a larger version click a pic. 
Not sure if this one works with the nose of the boat chopped off, but I liked the feeling of movement in the shot.

They're in Botany, but you won't be able to reach them far, unless you arm with the 400 or 500 or 600. Let him go to Taree, Mother Day is more important with them same as other. Birddog114

Peter, the first shot is an absolute ripper. There's a great sense of action and drama.
Although the second image is a great pan, it does bother me having the bow chopped off. I know just what you mean about panning shots being difficult after spending yesterday watching some friends race at Oran Park. All of the best panned shots seem to have some part of the car chopped off...  Andrew

That first one is great, really love it. Looks like you were on the Newcastle side, were you around the Brewery? Did you have a CPL on the lens? That first one is great. Certainly a lot more exciting then the little taste I got on the Saturday. Oddly I'm really unhappy with the first image the more I look at it because the boat itself is a little soft. I did some more PP last night on my other shots and will finish tonight. I already have some better shots than #2 that show the whole boat and will post the pick of the lot when I'm finished.
André, I took your advice (thank you) and was on the landing at the front of the Brewery straight in front of the buoys where the boats turned. And yes CPL for all but about 5 test shots. More PP to do, but it brought up the wake heaps better. Peter

Hi Peter,
you have some good ones as well on your smugmug site. I happened to drive at the foreshore today, they had the boats loaded on trailers and were driving them away. They look much bigger out of the water!! I had my camera, but was running late for my meeting, so no pics
