Call my a fussy bugger, but I think B&W is the way to go, but not the treatment you have posted, I'm not exactly sure what's wrong with it to my eye, but I think the treatment needs to be more dramatic to match the composition (if you follow?). If I get a chance after I've slept I'll give a conversion a go.

Owen - I was thinking much more gritty and contrasty to bring out the drama (so the cross is white and peppered with the black spots of the sandstone)
