Ribbons in the night

This is a bit different from my usual horse showjumping stuff..I don't often get to the big city lights so it was a bit of fun to muck around with different exposures.

Usually this kind of photo leaves me cold, BUT this is outstanding as it has colour and definition and I would love to hang this on my wall

Where did you take the photo and could you please tell me about the process you used to take it (ie. exif info plus how quickly were you moving the camera around)?

This was taken in Cairns when I was up there at a conference a few days ago (so marcotrov can do this, and not only sream of doing so ). The casino has a quadrangular domed roof and has lighting running down each corner. Between dusk and midnight there is a rapidly changing multicoloured lighting sequence down the corner lighting strips. In addition there are multiple white spot lights which blink on and off (these spot lights give the star like background). The lights come on and off so rapidly that edges of the lights remain relatively sharp in the photo. I just opened the shutter and moved the camera around in various directions until the shutter closed to achieve different effects. By crossing the movement path folded translucent layers of light could be generated. Because the roof of the casino was otherwise dark there were no static objects in the photo to ruin the shot. There was no post processing. I've got a lot of other shots with different effects but I do want to do a little PPing on some of them so at some stage I'll stick them up on smugmug (and maybe post one or two of the better ones here).

I hope that explains the technique but if you want to try it yourself just take your camera along and book into room 1107 at the Cairns International Hotel and stand on the balconey and take some shots.

Brilliant. A lot like Pirostitch's drawing with light, but with a seductive, smoky twist
