Hi there,

Well finally the weather was nice this morning!! Went out to Mornington with the D2X and 500 f4 looking for Terns... Could only find one :)

I'm not sure if these images work for me. I had a little trouble with blown highlights.

Any comments on composition, lighting and general overall look would be greatly appreciated... I also have to work on my long lens technique as the D2X REALLY shows any small vibrations!!! Are the highlights too much?

All Images: D2X, SB-800, Better Beamer, 500 F4, 1.4x TC

ISO100, 1/500, f5.6

ISO100, 1/200, f8

Tips to improve greatly appreciated. The D2X is a hard beast to tame!!

#3 for me too Paul. The others are great too, althought #2 looks a bit blown out.

Paul,

same here, third one is great.

the fourth is also nice, but highlights on the chest does detract a bit.

First two don't do much for me, sorry.

Cheers,

André

Thanks for the comments guys,

I was a little worried about the sharpness of these while looking at them 100% view... However I just printed out the photo below and number 3 (above) to A4 size and they are really tack sharp.

I guess because of the 12.2MP of the D2X vs 6 on the D70 I have to get used to looking at a softer 100% preview. Printed out they are at least as sharp as the D70... probably more so.

Also,

Can anyone confirm that these are the LITTLE pied cormorant and not the regular pied cormorant?

According to my reference the little pied cormorant has the spikey 'hair' but can't really see any other differences. The birds in these shots were wet which might have given them the spikeyness

Thanks

Paul

I like the symmetry of the bird assumedly drying its wings(?).

Find the third one the most "balanced" for me, although the last one seems more interesting by seeing the bird "face on" so to speak...

After scrolling down to see the last shot though, I think I like that one the most, maybe because it seems more detailed?

From my book, it also looks like the Little Pied Cormorant and as you mention, the "spiky hair" does it.
