Taken after lunch today. d70, kit lens, fill flash. Little bit soft around the eyes, focus was a little off.
C+C please. Does this work as a portrait?

Any comments, anyone?

I would say that the angle is probably a bit low and the position of his knee is also a bit distracting. but the exposure is spot on! I dont think it works as a portrait as such, but it is a good candid type shot, unless he was posing

The face is appealing but I agree with Nathan that the knee is distracting and the arm and knee appear very large due to the angle. I also find the top left (roof?) annoying and would try to clone it out.

I find it quite engaging Craig, but there's a few elements I find distracting. The first is the roofline in the top LHS of the image - maybe you could clone it out. The second is the arm in the lower LHS - maybe you could lose it in the shadows, or again clone it out. The third is the man made structure which looks almost like it's growing out of the subjects back. Again, perhaps this could be cloned out, or the background could be blurred. The final distraction is the edge of the palm fronds in the upper RHS of the photo.
