Especially for Chris (Sirhc55) who hates Opera House Pics.

The image below is a Photoshop HDR (High Dynamic Range) merge of 6 separate shots taken on Friday night using the 24-120 VR.

Stubbsy,

How many OH photos did we shoot in the past and last two weeks?
Though, we may have some other interesting subject!
Typical of post card subject sir!

why did you have to hdr this image out of 6 composites

all you nned is one for the sky and one for the soh

trying to experiment?

Not so Wendell

I needed it to get the detail in the sails too since the lighting on the sails varies significantly as does that of the base. Probably only needed 3 images but I had 6 so what the heck!

Chris Thought you'd love it

Birdy - What's wrong with "postcard shots" I haven't done this one yet. It's good practice.

Impressive almost pearlescent sheen and detail to the sails

Not sure about this Peter... And in fact I'm actually not sure about HDR processed images in general...

My understanding is that the HDR process is supposed to produce an image that is closer to the dynamic range empowered by the human eye...
My experiments with that feature of PS so far have all produced fairly artificial looking images...

As for your image, while it is quite beautiful in its own way, IMHO, it doesn't look terribly true to life.
I don't ever remember seeing the Opera House in that light... Hope you know what I mean...

Peter
nice light levels but the picture looks a little soft, did you use a tripod or were they handheld (there is an option you can tick when using handheld shots in HDR to let photoshop try and align the shots first)

John I know exactly what you mean and agree completely. What appeals to me about this image is the odd quality achieved - as Glen says, a sort of pearly luminescence & as you say not at all like what the naked eye sees.

Here's the middle image in the sequence - a more normal rendition and closer to naked eye quality:

I'm also not sure about the image. The image does have an unusual look about it....it is different...but I don't think the process works best for night shots. I think it's forte is for interiors with windows and landscape that are harshly lit. But knowing you it won't be long before we see some of those.
