Two final images from my dusk shoot on Saturday. I'm unsure about the treatment for these 3 images so I'm asking for your help

Is this one too busy? I can't decide. Also tried a Canvas texture a la Matt K (click to see it larger) (yes I know the caption is wrong)




Can't decide on the crop for this one. Is there too much sky?



Finally, and for all those who love the SOH, is this shot. I'm not sure about the framing. Does the bridge add to or detract from the shot?

Yes I think a bit busy. I'd like to see some water under that boat in the foreground which might neutralise that a bit

I think if you halved the amount of sky from the top of the tallest building to the top of the frame it would be about right for my taste

There is something out of balance about it - probably is the bridge - try cloning it out

Hi Peter,

#1. I personally don't like the cavas texture - love the shot, busy or not.
#2. Maybe a smidge off the sky, although if I was going to crop it, I would get rid of the top 3rd and the right hand side 3rd, ending it at the right side of the Westpac building.
#3. I think the bridge adds to the shot.

#1, doesn't do it for me. Just too much in the one shot. I much prefer #2 from which I presume it was cropped. In #2, the amount of sky is just right for me, nice balance with the buildings.

In #3, gee that looks familiar (made me check my smugmug site, got one very similar), something doesn't look right around the light on the left hand sail of the OH. My first thought was are you importing into photoshop as a 8 bit image and getting a banding effect because you're working in 8 bit? I was getting some strange effects like this til I changed to 16 bit imports of the nefs. Means you get 4096 (2**12) shades of each colour channel instead of 256. I do like the composition of this shot though.

#1 isn't as good as the other similar shots you've posted of the buildings at sunset. Too tight for me, especially the chopped off boat, and the canvas doesn't add much.

#2, I'd want that much sky or more. Nice subdued evening colours

#3 the composition doesn't work for me because there's a chopped off bit on both sides. I think I'd like it if either the bridge or the sail on the RHS was cut.

#1 doesn't work for me Peter

#2 I'd crop the sky by a smidge, but regardless of whether you do or not, it's a great photo

#3 I'll go against the flow here and say that I really like it. Both the composition and PP treatment work well.

#1 + #2 are not better than the other version in your "GOLDEN HOUR" thread. Keep the Golden Hour and let these go.

Thank you all for your input. I'll ditch #1 (which BTW was NOT a crop out of #2) and likewise #3 and I've recropped #2 to give the image below

#2 is vastly improved by your treatment here Peter.

Thanks Bob. That's one of the great things about this place - plenty of people to help perfect the shots and to discard the so-so ones. I am indebted to all who helped me in this thread since there is no question the revision is better

#1, I keep looking down to the water and I feel cramped, maybe it's just busy...

#2 I really like, terrific colors and tones, although for some reason the small red details (like the "W" bank symbol and the red detail in what I think is a ferry, seem like they're really hot on my uncalibrated monitor???

#3 is bloody great, the bridge does seem to take me away from the bridge, love the starburst light on the left arch, although the crop on the right hand side seems awkward...

The last post seems to have really composed the frame nicely with the crop... The red bits look hot again though...??? Wonder if it's just my monitor?

Nice images Peter. I bet you are glad of the D2X size images when it comes to cropping
