Hi,

I'm Owen's wife. Owen has been giving me some lessons on using the camera. Here is a photo taken at one of the beaches on Jervis Bay following my lesson on 'aperture'. Comments and critiques will be appreciated.

colours are great, and really good composition, only thing would be that it is a tad dark, but thats an easy fix.

The white balance seems a little bit off to me - a little too blue. I would try and bring out some warmer colours, particularly in the sand and rocks. Otherwise, nice. And welcome.

Good effort. Nice composition. The exposure is good - maybe a tad dark, which would be expected from the D70. Minor adjustement is all that would be required. White balance is a little cool (towards blue). I was wondering if you had run a filter across this image. Whether by design or not, you have managed to do a good job on getting everything in reasonable focus. I am curious as to where you focused. 18mm focal length at F11 is able to focus virtually from your toes to infinity when focused at 6 feet (or a little more).

Thanks Matt. My focal point was the shadows created by the rocks. I used a polariser filter when taking the shot, and adjusted the saturation and white balance in the PP phase.

Thanks for welcoming me to the forum. It's become a case of having to become interested in photography in order to spend some time with Owen!

I like the way you've framed this, good interest in the foreground, with the leading edge of the water taking the viewer through the image, good stuff...

Much prefer the color temp/WB in the second image...

The second version is better since the blue tinge has been toned down. Compositionally it works wekk too. PS Does this mean Owen gets to spend more $$$ on gear

Well, that is one way of keeping an eye on him.

It sounds like you knew exactly what you were doing when you took this shot. Aperture, where to focus for this scene, and what the result was going to be... Good teacher or talented student?

I had a play with the second image, which I thought was still a little too cool, in PS. I set a grey point from the foam (which should be fairly neutral) just above the right most rock for what I thought was a better overall WB. The water comes out fairly green which is how I remember southern algae loaded waters (it is blue in the tropics due to the lack of algae)... but it has been a while.

Welcome Lisa, It's great to see another partner joining the forum Mr _7 comes on from time to time (Katie G) to check up on me.

Looks like Owen is teaching you well and you have a good idea, as others have said the second version is an improvement! I grew up around Jervis Bay but rarely get down to visit so it's nice to see photos of it, so please post more.

As no doubt you've been told (like my long suffering wife) this is a really good place to learn (so a lot of time needs to be spent here), and Owen really does need all those new lenses...
