The DOF is a bit shallow, but I'm not fussed. My aim was to get the eyes sharp (or at least one of them) as eyes give a better idea of the person's emotion and thoughts.
Both shots taken with the 20mm f2.8 at ISO 800
C&C appreciated

#1 works much better for me. Especially the way it's cropped with your forehead against the edge of the frame. Peter

Yes quite intense gaze in #1. Very manly look.
I like them and you picked up on the limited DOF. Steve (Nikon D200/D700)

very stylish
in particular your angled 1/4 view and the colour suitsthe scene well who needs a studio softbox when there are heaps of free ones all over the place, excellent work! how did you take it, tripod camrera on self timer, someone else taking the shot?
the long highlight in the eye on the first one looks a little "evil" ....
maybe you could put it in the 666 thread ![]() Shane

I like number 2, it is less distorted and gives a better view. It also gives a floating head feel to it.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Honestly didn't think it'd get this many replies
![]() It was all handheld with the camera held really close to me, hence the 20mm and most likely cause of the shallow DOF. The exercise was more of an experiment for me really to start observing ambient and natural light and how I can best take advantage of it. I like the 20mm a lot especially for portrait shots as it forces me to get close to the subject. Some people get put off by this as they think I'll pick up every pore and pimple on their face, but then I show them the pic and they're fine with it ![]() If I have a long time to wait for my partner to finish work when I pick her up, I might go back and try again with a higher f stop to eliminate that DOF issue. On the one hand it's great, but on the other hand it can be greater...*sigh* Hassy, Leica, Nikon, iPhone
