my first time seeing an osprey so I was happy to get some usable shots out of it.
Mostly the things were too far away (or 400mm wasnt enough lens whichever way you wish to look at it.)
This was my favourite shot from the day because of the juxtaposition of a life and death struggle going on (between the fish and the bird, and the people behind walking dogs, blissfully unaware of what is going on right next to them.
light wasnt the best.
Does this work or do you prefer the type with no urban stuff in the frame??

Steve - found it. Pity about the background. At least you had a better day than me, as my photography equipment did not leave home
I think that you need to train the osprey to do a fly by when you are in position with your D2x, G-1325, Gimbal Head, longest lens and blue sky as background. Have you bought a X-Lottery Ticket for tonight's draw so you can purchase of the Nikkor 600mm f/4

fozzie: did you see the post I made a few weeks ago??
had the use of a 600f4 for the weekend.
manual focus though. what a weapon 10kg worth easy.
what a weapon
As for training the birds, I think if you sat there and put the time in, you may well get a closer fishing shot. I lost one shot when I moved the af area off centre and got a perect shot of some water with an OOF bird dead centre.
I didnt mind this despite the background because it shows nobody giving a damn about the birds.

Steve - yes I did, what an experience
Photography can be very frustrating at times. Change a setting or angle and miss the shot. Hopefully next time out you can get the shot you wanted.

Due to the sharpness of the bird it looks like u plonked it right there on that background. Maybe try putting it on anothe background, as you thought.

admagic,
this wasnt plonked into this background,
what happened was that this guy grabbed the fish from the water and was flying more or less straight at me.
focus was locked on the bird, but the bridge wasnt that far behind the action so as to be that OOF

Great catch - both yours and the bird's.
I've done just enough bird chasing to have some idea how pleased you must be with this shot.
FWIW I prefer the cropped version (without the people) in your gallery as a picture, but you're right, this one tells more of a story.
Well done.

gotta get me a faster AF lens.
your 300 f2.8 with tc17 absolutely eats my 80-400vr in terms of focus speed and reacquisition time.

Pretty good steve considering the distance. Now what we need is an 80-400VR at 2.8 or better

oneput: with IF and sw technology.
Tried a 300 f2.8 with 1.7tc on it and the AF speed is frightening in comparison to the 80-400vr. as is re acquisition.
