I was asked by a work colleague to take some photos of her grandchild.

I guess she got a bit sick of it all and "luckily" ended up with this.

I'd appreciate comments about the photo itself and which crop people prefer most.

Antman - you really gave her the shits didn't you Great shot though - well taken. I prefer the first shot - gives it a sense of place - and I like the sense of isolation of the child against the brick wall - space for the photo to 'move'. Or at least that's my opinion

WOW, now that is a death stare. I like the use of DOF, with the tight crop the pick.

Not a huge fan of the brick wall as background, but it's a cute and very nicely lit shot. I like the close crop.

are though her real eyebrows?

I like this portrait, the child's expression is quite stunning. I prefer the orginal shot, like blackstormy I appreciate the sense of isolation that the background brings.

Geoff - not the best capture but at the same time it has a lot going for it. Pity she wasn't happy, however it's a thinking pose, serious but timeless - I think I prefer the original. Nicely composed and sharp too. If you feel comfortable doing it (and make sure it's ok with the parent/s - tickle her on the tummy and then shoot Often works a treat - but clearly this time, she was over it Maybe next time, disguise as someone different hehe.

I'm still undecided about the cropping. Her expression is pretty special.
She did lighten up after a little while and we did get some more pics after this, but this was my favourite.

And yes Redline, they are her real eyebrows.

Geoff, thanks for the tips. Kiddy portrait photography is hard work. I think I'll stick with the pelicans and landscapes.

Nicely done Geoff - the expression is classic although it appears to me she's looking ever so slightly to your left.

Prefer the close crop as, for me, it intensifies the expression.
