Autumn leaves

I would like to know what people think of this shot.

Image

It was taken last month by my wife, and I have tried to tweak the contrast and color, but I dont know whether I have gotten it quite right. Let me know your thoughts. I have a couple others from the same time, but I dont think they are quite as nice. Most of them are marred by the shadows from the trees, or the kids are blurred from jumping in the leaves.

I dont see much with the girl and leaves there, but I will crop out tight on her face, she is such a cute girl!

So you dont like the pic? compositionally? or is it just a "average" picture.

I have a lot of close up pictures of her, and not enough of pictures with her in it. Any thoughts on what might make this shot more than "average"?

i personally like the photo (and the subject) but think it would look better if you cut out some of the extra bits on the side - as in make it skinnier - sorry i dont know the technical term for this. :)

Hey Nathan,

Glad to see you wife is using the camera, how is she finding it ? I hope she's enjoying it, she certainly has a host of subjects to model for her :)

I think compositionally the shot would be stronger with a lower perspective, it's commonly said that we need to get down on eye level with children photograph and as a whole I think it's so true the pictures are generally stronger for it. This is close but I'd say a foot, foot and a half lower and you would get a clearer seperation between subject and background. Then the soul focus would be on (I wont' say her name) and the leaves. The PP looks pretty good from what I can see, a smidgen of fill flash would of been nice but I wouldn't expect your wife to have thought of that on a day in the park.

That would be "Crop" Katie :) A pretty good suggestion in this case. BTW.

Crop : To cut out or trim unneeded portions of an image or a page is to Crop

I'll try cropping it and will post later.

I do tend to get down on the same level with the kids, but then they like to run over and see the pictures we just took, which makes it hard to get a bunch of sequential shots.

We need to build you a hide, so you can hide from your own children and photograph them in their natural habitat :)

Like u I have a host of problems getting shots of my kids. As soon as they see the camera pointed at them they put on the stupid faces or move away etc. I have found bribey will get u a few shots if your lucky :)

Hey Nathan - like the shot, was just lacking something... so had a play (hope you don't mind?) Just lightened her face a little, bought out her eyes a bit more, and saturated the leaves a bit (well they are autumn leaves, so thought a bit brighter).

If you don't like, I'll remove, just let me know :)
