Do these work?

Was down in Geelong over the weekend, and we went down to Portarlington for a look. Mostly at the cold and wind as it turns out... But anyway. Got a few photos on the pier, played around a bit with the curves. The sunset was being uncooperative unfortunately... So not a lot of pretty colours, but there's still something in here I think.... Just trying to work out how to bring it out.

Fill flash would help on the first shot the second is an interesting concept shot a bit more colour in the sky would be nice.

Try cropping a bit of the blank foreground out of the second shot too?

Although I'm not an expert on it, similar to what Dug said, I can imagine a full on studio flash setup there... I love the concept flash gear outdoors. The studio in the real world so to speak. I think this image would have been a perfect way to use it.

Though, that's my little bent at present so perhaps don't take too much notice!

Thanks for the comments guys - as you can see, the lighting was a bit ordinary. I was hoping for a more colourful sunset, but alas, it was not meant to be.

I didn't think about using flash fill at the time, but I will keep it in mind. Of course, that was a real opportunistic snap, as the angler had just gotten a fish hooked

I think #1 is an interesting shot but you needed more contrast between the water and the fisherman for an effective sillouhette.
