Found a quiet spot by the river a bit out of town as I wanted to get more familiar with the better beamer I have not put to much use in the 6 months or so that I have had it.

This guy got in closer than I anticipated and I'm sure I must have nearly blinded him.

Anyway was able to recover what I thought would have been blown highlights using the raw shot in the new version of capture. Nx Capture has a crap GUI but I continue to enjoy many of its features. No other PP not sharpened etc.

Nice capture Bob. My only change would be to clone out the flash highlight in the eye. Some like to leave the highlight so I guess it's a personal preference thing

Nice close-up Bob. Pretty sure it's a white-faced heron, assuming your colour rendition is accurate.

The beamer is certainly a great piece of kit when mastered (which I haven't). Avkomp, BlacknStormy, among others, do some great work with it. Knocking down the flash EV for white plumage seems to be the big tip. PS - Good point Mark but I'm one of those that like leaving some catchlight in the eye. Otherwise, for me, the eye just looks like a black, lifeless dot that has no shape or lustre. Just seems a little more vivid with reflection in it though one has to be careful not to overdo it.

That was my first thought, and I don't feel comfortable thumbing-down a photograph without any specific critique. So, this is what I reckon:

Much of the plumage on the head is blown out. The background (the bright upper part) is distracting. Although eye and beak are in sharp focus, the necks appears to not to be.

I don't mind the catch-light in the eye, though. Quite the contrary, I think it's the best feature of the shot. I also like the total background blur.
