Hello,

This is my first time shooting flowers. I just recently acquired the Micro Nikkor AF 105mm 2.8D and it really sings ! What I've found is that macro shooting is an entirely different thing altogether. They aren't anything extraordinay though. It was my first time and there is still a lot to learn. My next purchase would be a CPL filter. Flowers sure are beautiful subjects to shoot. Possibly the most colorful objects in the whole natural world?? Anyways, all these were taken in a garden right in front of my office.

Time: 7:00-8:00 AM
Lens: Micro Nikkor AF 105mm 2.8D
CPL filter: No
Resized: Yes
Cropped: Yes
Post Processing: No
ISO: 200-400

Hello Kamran
Your first one is full of powerful colour, but I find the yellow in the background a little strong, so maybe you could select them with Quickmask or similar and calm them down somewhat with saturation, etc. Try tp focus on the centre of the flower and check your depth of field with the DOF preview until the who;e of the subject flower is sharp. Maybe a little more of the stem in the image if possible for this particular shot.

No. 2 Has a nice soft feel to it. I might have bumped the contrast a little either with Brightness/Contrast or levels and framed it vertically along with desaturating the red flower below it somewhat to stop distraction. The pointy leaf at bottom right is a candidate for cloning out too. Once again, focus on the centre of the flower rather than the leading edge. Switch to manual focus for macro.

No. 3, I am afraid is going nowhere. The leaf is too intrusive and the too shallow depth of field doesn't seem to suit the image for me at least.

No.4 & No. 5 lack composition for my taste. Flowers are very seductive, but still need to be treated to some degree of placement within the frame. Too central in the frame and again the shallow depth of field does not seem to grab me on these particular images. No 5 would be an interesting bloom to work more with. Maybe move right in closer still so you don't have trouble with the extreme depth of the whole bloom? Contrast needs some work on these too.

Great first effort for flowers, now all you need are a few well placed bugs and away you go.
Let's see more

You mention up front that the images have been resized and cropped, but no PP: I think it is the PP that is missing. They are a bit flat - they could be markedly improved with some PP.

Col has given you some great advice - that is where I would start...
