Several months ago I went to Dee Why to try my hand at some surfing shots, the 4 shots here I think turned out not to bad. Your opinions and any tips are welcome.

I only see links Rick and not the actual photos themselves. Have a look at how you have put this post together.

On another note I'd check the highlights when you take surf shots as the White Surf looks blown to me, you may also wish to take them with a faster shutter spped to stop the action.

Keep going and you'll get some good shots.

The first image is the best. It's a great turn and you've captured the surfer in the peak moment. But I agree that a faster shutter speed is needed as this image doesn't quite work as a speed blur - the logos on the front of his board are almost sharp.

I like No.1 the best too. Very nice.

Which lens are you using? I use settings similar to this with my D70:

Manual mode
Jpeg
Spot metering
Multi shot mode
F5.6 (lens dependent of course)
1/500 to 1/1000 shutter speed
ISO 200

I try and shoot surf shots on the east coast form midday onwards, the later the better, even better from the side if you can get a vantage spot on a headland somewhere.

great shots, and I think you nailed it with the first one. I don't see any dramatic blown highlight issues and the shutter speed on the first image gives it a sense of speed. Making it better IMHO than the typical frozen in time shot. Love it.

I think some of the blur is because I was panning on the surfers so the camera was moving one direction and waves, splash etc in others, combined with a relativley slow shutter speed this was as good as I was going to get.

I was shooting in AFC mode trying to get a series of shots of each ride, the 1st and 2nd are no's 1 and 4 of a 5 shot sequence over about 2 minutes.

I was using a 70-300D lens @300, aperture priority, spot metering ISO200 F8 and 1/200 to 250 th sec. It was mid morning as I had to be at Manly for a barbie by 11.00am.

Nice shots Rick. Especially like #1 and #2 is OK. In #3 the lack of light on the subject becomes a factor due to the black wetsuit. Yeah and #4 shows the end of the ride pretty well.
