Well.....another crack at trying to use the 70-300G for action shots. I think I'm starting to get the hang of it as I'm more or less happy with this image. It would have been nice to get a little more light on his face and I suspect the focal point was not quite right. What do you think? (as usual, I expect brutal honesty!)

For those who haven't met him, its DJXtreme playing in our local (Barossa Valley) hockey comp.

Thanks for looking

Nat i think this pic is fine even taken with the cheap 70-300 G lens. I too have this lens although i do not use it anymore i think for what it is it is a good lens for general stuff. It is not fast by any means but i have had some good shots from this lens once you know it's limits and as seen here this shot is fine, ok we cant always have the lighting the way we want it but i cant see anything wrong with this pic.
Cheers

i like it and of course my opinion is entirely unbiased :P .

really though i reckon its a great shot, the colours seem good and its well composed. it's not the easiest sport to shoot and it must have taken some patience to get a picture where i had at least a semblance of control of the ball.

bit worried about my grip there with the right hand though, if anyone ever lays a bad tackle on me im sure to get at least one finger broken :?

Thanks for your comments John. I have seen a number of examples of really good photos taken with the 70-300G. I need to learn to use it, rather than bag it as it is my only option with this length. Also, (as my wife will readily point out  ) I'm in no position to upgrade yet.

No, not really, I actually had two to choose from :P :P :P.
I have about 15 other shots where you were standing in the bachground watching the action though! :P :P :P
