Jessica's Red Chair project update #3My daughter Jessica is in her final year of school and as part of her HSC in art she has chosen to put together 12 to 18 photos All the photos will incorporate a red chair .The chair represents her late grandfather and all the photos will be taken at places he frequently visited though his life. This is from today’s outing and with the help of Zeeke to fix a small problem I am posting this pix for comments to see if she is heading in the right direction?

that's nicely done.
there was another red chair project a little while back which I found on the web... some chap just taking a red chair around and getting the general public to interact with it... i'll try and find the link, was quite inspirational... cheers http://www.markcrossphotography.com - A camera, glass, and some light.
LOZ, great concept and very touching. As mentioned, I would desaturate the red a touch and perhaps it would more poignant if the chair was facing the water, cause I would imagine grandpa would have been looking that way, rather than back up the jetty...
If I'm alone in a forest and my wife is not around to hear what I say, am I still wrong ??
It was actually featured on this forum just under a year ago... http://dslrusers.com/viewtopic.php?t=6889 Cheers, John

I Like it John, keep it the way it is... the saturation on the chair is perfect... it makes it stand out more and gives it its own life and personality, bold and strong.. if it was toned down, I dont think it would be as effective

Thanks for the link my daughter saw a zillion pix on Flickr which gave her the inspiration . From what I can see most pix were one offs without a meaning or story . One more for tonight which is very different . ![]() Last edited by LOZ on Sat Jun 10, 2006 11:16 pm, edited 1 time in total.
yep.. that's the one... ![]() cheers http://www.markcrossphotography.com - A camera, glass, and some light.
Loz, really nice twist on a familiar concept. Only one thing, not a right or wrong, she may want to consider the orientation of the chair if it represents her grandfather. This chair seems orientated for the viewer, I would orientate it in this shot as the grandfather would be ie towards the water. This would also give a more absent lonely feeling to it. In other shots, say on the front porch, an orientation towards the viewer would be appropriate. Then again I could be just talking crap

I really do like these Red Chair shots. Very well done.
I concur the comments about the orientation of the chair in the first shot that was posted Steve
------------------------------------------------------- So many things to do - so little time.
the concept is great
but i think the man and the red chaor both the most important elements in the hsot are too close to each other it does not look dramatic and the strength of the concept is dulled a little as there is a visual interplay between the surrealness of a full coloured chair in a monochrome scene and a man right next to it i woudl suggest the man sits on the left hand side of the chair and the red chair balances it from it's current location, then crop a little tighter anyway loz your daughter has a great concept there
better
the pic is balanced now but i think the way to read this image woudl be man first then straff across to the red chair also i would take out the colour on the leaves the main concpet here is the red chair no other colour should obscure it keep it simple and powerful
Loving it Loz - how fantastic would it be to see this series in the NSW Art Express - something that we try to get to every year. Some lovely work here!

Keep up the good work
Great idea/theme and nicely explored in the images you have posted I like the 2nd take of the sitting man, the chair could be used to represent an absent partner and associated grief.... I'm sure her teacher will be impressed! Cheers Gecko Nikon D70, SB600, Benbo Trekker, LSII, KingPano and a lot to learn!
Awesome shots there Jess.. looks like you learnt a thing or 2 from your old man...
Keep up the great work! Tim D70 - D200/MBD200 Coming soon - Too Much Gear, Not Enough Talent
