Well, two shots of the same dog at least..

I posted these on DigitalSLR but am interested in other views here too.

Simon - as a fellow dog lover I find these close to perfect. In the eye of the owner (you) how would u critique these images yourself? I say if you're happy with them and they evoke a warm feeling of love and affection to your hound then you've done well. Compositionally they look great, are these frame worthy in your mind?

I really love the first one and it's now my PC wallpaper. Birdy's just told me he's sending my new printer today and I suspect this shot will be the first to roll of it!

The second one, although I'm happy with it technically (except for the wagging tail!), just doesn't evoke the same response from me. A little too posed, too contrived, too snap-shotty and too straight!

My daughter is doing an E-zine for a school project and has chosen Jack Russells as the subject. These shots were from a major shoot we did on Sunday arvo that resulted in a stack of keepers as far as SHE was concerned but only a few as far as I was!!! She's not as harsh a judge as I am!

Simon, Good shots. The first is a great portrait and the second is the way I always seemed to get shots of my dogs in the past. Nice and sharp shots - can't stop that wagging tail. Cheers, Mick

I like both. The wagging tail in #2 is great. Such a happy little dog.

I'm not a big dog fan myself, but I appreciate good shots when I see them. For me Simon the first is stronger as an image, but the second says it all from a masters perspective, loyal, obedient friend.

Why do you ask?

Looks like a lovely/lively little chap. One of the downsides about apartment living is that I am not able to have a dog.

Thanks Glen - amazing what a little biscuit will do....

The first is a terrific portrait shot, great pose, good separation from the background making the subject really stand out...

The second one is more for the dog's Dad, showing a mischevious happy personality, great happy image but on that angle looking down doesn't have the emotional, portrait feel of the first (which is a cracker!)... Was the flash used for both? The second seems to have some coloration in the eyes...

Great images Simon Colour and composition terrific. And he doesn't look at all cheeky

Thanks Andrew - flash was used for both. Not sure about the colouration - may have occurred with LAB colour curve adjustment.

Simon I can't avoid liking these as I have a JR named Toby myself, although rough coated. It is hard to keep them still long enough to pose. What I like best about the first is the colour you have captured as well as the pose.
