My River of Fire pics are pathetic in comparison. I took my little Olympus because I thought it would be too crowded to take tripods and the Canon, so I guess I paid the price. Well done!

Griffo, how did you get them? Did you use the flash to freeze movement? I've been having trouble taking pictures at night in raw format, let alone fireworks. I guess I have a lot to learn yet... Again well done, your pics are excellent.

zafra - just kept it really simple - tripod, long exposure, focus at infinity. The F-111 photo was approx 2.5km away, but the fireworks were quite a bit closer (50-60m), hence a smaller apeture.

I didn't use flash in any of them, although in hindsight I thought I should have used some fill flash and taken some photos from behind the crowd, to capture the human element, although you'd still need the long exposure to catch the trails.

Awesome pics. Newbie question, but why would you want bigger aperture for further subjects and smaller aperture for closer subject. Any relationship between the two ?

asaroha - it was more an afterthought than anything - honestly.

The F-111 was a long way away, and as such the focus was at infinity meaning DOF was not a big issue - hence the wide apeture, whereas the closer fireworks had the focus ring back from the infinity stop, so I guess a smaller apeture would give a slightly longer depth of focus.

now I'm confused!?!

having said that - my apetures are the wrong way around for my reasoning - like I said afterthought more than intention!

Griffo - Cheers for the exif. I would have expected a slightly higher F stop (eg F11) for the first shot, but you have done well. If it aint broken dont fix it

Oh Wow! I wish I didn't have to work that evening! Thanks for the exif data, I've been curious about firework photos. V. upset I missed out... and I live at Toowong!

Both very nice photos. My pick is the second one, bacause it's not something you see every day, whereas the fireworks image (although nicely taken) is IMO just another fireworks pic.

The image with the F-111 trail I find quite interesting and overlooking the blown highlights in the water, which would have been difficult to get away from, this photo makes me think what is going to happen next....which I find appealing.

it was only maybe 4 seconds, but not all of the fire trail shows in the photo (obviously). I was listening to the radio where they "talk in" the aircraft (probably pre-recorded) and from Toowong you can actually see the aircraft nav lights as they scoot across Annerley on their terrain following radar....by the time you see the red lights and hit the button they're already starting to dump and light the burners....you have to be ready.

I guess the issue here, and thanks for the EXIF data, is that you were quite away from the action and therefore had a few extra seconds and more room at your disposal. Those of us at Kangaroo Point, being closer to the action had less time and more people interference to contend with. I am not making excuses for myself and I thank you Griffo for the photos, the technical data, and what is more important the technical tips. Very nice photos indeed!
