Storm Pic - Opinion Please

Hi all,

This is one shot I have shortlisted for the FHF challenge. I was just wanting feedback from members: 'Does the blown highlight distract too much for this?' or if they 'don't think it appropriate for the theme?'

Thanks .....

Image

edited - sorry about the size earlier

Here is a rework with some of the suggestions

Image

Added my final reworked version. Taking all comments into consideration I found when I went back to the raw image I was able to avoid the blown highlight, keep the storm nice and dirty, and lift the foreground a little. Thanks everyone for your feedback.

Cheers,
Craig

WOW the awesome world we live in. Great capture.
The white area is distracting but I keep coming back to the formation of the cloud. I think if you adjusted for the white you would loose all the detail in the foreground. Great shot.

as for the challenge... yes I would crop it to reduce the blown highlight and perhaps lighten it a tad and adjust the contrast to bring out the texture of the clouds a little bit more....

Excellent Craig. And in my opinion, the blown highlights add to the impact of the image.

 Ditto!

A beautiful image of Mother Nature at her most ferosious! Love it! I'd also be inclined to lighten the ground a little to bring out a bit more detail.

Can I ask where and when it was taken?

Thanks for the feedback all,

I will try the ideas suggested and see how it looks.

It was taken 17 December 2005 - Far North Coast. The storm made a mess of a few villages around Lismore. Major impacts were, Casino, Dunoon and Modanville.

Cheers,

Craig

That's a definite, but I'd also suggest the crop & selective lighten mentioned. Don't over obsess about the highlight though as it's need to give some oomph to the shot.

That's a definite improvement Craig. Especially since the houses in the path are now more obvious.

Jordan, nice guster tell me this did it come over all dirty like shown and after it passed did all hell break loose?
Have you spoken to Ray Mullens lately he seems to be off the scene?
Ray used to be a constant visitor to this site early days.
I haven't spoken to him in ages.

Haven't caught up with Ray for a while. Not sure what he is up to lately, haven't seen him around here for a while. Might give him a call and see how he is going.

The storm itself didn't hit Goonellabah (where I took the shot from) too hard - just a bit of hail, wind etc. But it sure made a mess of some of the outlying villages. I have some more shots of it as it came closer - very dark and very dirty. Here is a shot of the back end of it later that afternoon....

Craig, I too prefer the original. It looks more stormy and forboding to me. I like the new post of the back of the storm as well. Lovely colours in the clouds.
Cheers

Amazing capture Craig, we had heaps of storms around Woolgoolga at the same time, that time of year on the north coast. Excellent shot. BTW, coffee's on in Coffs next time you're coming through... :D

Cheers to all for the kind comments. So I have a divided opinion on the original and reworked image. Hmmmm perhaps, just put the two together and adjust the opacity a bit - that way I will have a shot that is somewhere in between the original and the reworked.

Again thanks for the encouragement and opinions

Craig, I really like the original shot posted (the blown highlight doesn't worry me). The re-work version is really good too. That last post of the back end of the storm is really awesome too. Cheers, Mick

Craig

I love this image.

For my money the original is the better shot. In the 2nd shot the image seems to loose any definition in the top left corner and on my screen even looks pixelated. Perhaps as you have said a combined image would be the go.

In your own words, sometimes you need the blown highlights to enhance the image. :D
