this series is from Fashion Week - Melbourne
backstage i always evaluate the scene try to find the most interesting light and good surfaces to bounce flash off, then i move the model to that location to shoot her
in this example, 85mm f1.4 at f4
model is lit by bounce flash from a concrete wall on the left and a tungsten spot lights her face from the right, for more interesting definition of her face
it's simply not god enough to 'snap' backstage you need to think about the best shot as the hair and makeup teams, designers and models work very hard for the look the photographer has a responsibility to take the best shot possible.
this one is much more flattering
same deal bounce flash from the side on the right rim of her neckline lit by a tungsten light
just for reference this is how she looks like on the runway
taken minutes before the Mad Cortes Show, it doesn't show the garment all too well but i took it as a portrait with a nostalgic touch
hard flash no diffusser no bounce you can tell by the shadow under her nose, taken with the 28-70
used a lower shutterspeed for this one to give it that sort of dreamy blur, but i think the framing off slightly top of head to close to the top of the frame

No. 1 and 2 are my favourites and No.2 has amazing lighting. Thanks for sharing the details. Do you do any flash compensations or just move the flash to and from the subject until the desired effect?

i try to share enough detaisl but you only have to read my previous posts all my secrets are embedded in those posts if you compile them
just for you however because im a nice guy i will repeat myself
flash technique chuck the math out the window it's just a flash
hold it far from the model if it's over exposed if its under exposed hold it closer
or use constant distance and if its too bright adjust flash comp - ev step
if its to dark adjust + ev step
trial and error
it's that simple
also helps if you learn from your experimentation once you do this 100 times youll get the gist of it

Wendell, these are fantastic shots - 1 & 2 are my favourates as the two forms of light seem so complementary and really suit the model. Well done.
