I have two Nikon Coolpix 5700's that are doing the same thing. I took one of them to Andersons in Brisbane yesterday and they are fixing it for free - took one look at it and said - oh yes, the sensor is shot, we will replace that, didnt ask for warranty or purchase dates... I was impressed that was for sure. I will be getting them fixed and sellign them to fund a D80 methinks!

These faulty Sony sensors came to light a year ago, and affected many models from many manufacturers. Many of Sony's smaller sensors are available in either plastic or ceramic packaging, and I think the manufacturing fault affected the plastic ones (e.g. eventually the plastic broke down, exposing the chip to atmosphere). I'm pretty sure that Sony was supplying lots of ceramic replacements to their customers.

You may be able to get it fixed at no charge, but I'm not sure where to start asking. A major camera repairer might be a good start.

This UK page references the original Sony statement, with a list of affected Sony models that includes the 717...

I sold my F707 to buy the D70. The F707 was a sensational camera, the lens was superb. I hope you can get the problem fixed.

yeah sony says i have to get it sent off for checking.
i might hold it off to take a few pics before getting it repaired

I too had the same fault with my 717. I purchased it when living in the UK, but took it to a repairer in Brisbane. It was fixed FOC, approx 14 months outside of the warranty.
