Street Photography - Newtown

Here's one from the other day:

Image

D70s w/ 50mm 1.4D
f/4.5 1/125s in Aperture Priority
-0.7 Exposure Comp.

I usually do black and white street images and tend to stick with candids (like the street gallery here) but thought this was a worthy colour candidate.

Does anyone have some suggestions for locations? I find Newtown too cramped along King St and too deserted in the back roads. Circular Quay is also a very good area because of the wide space and variety of people.

This is a lovely image, although I'd like to see it straightened :)

As for street photography locations, can't help you out - wish I had the confidence to take this genre on, as I love the examples we've seen lately!

Sheepie, just go out and do it. Most people don't even know you're there (even with a short lens) and at other times you only have interaction with cats :)

And in Sydney (possible other states too) it's completely legal as long as you're on public property (including trains/stations) and if you find yourself on private property all they can do is ask you to stop or leave but not delete your shots. You don't need a model release unless you intend to use the image commercially (fortunately doesn't include selling prints).

Great image, heading to Sydney after the long weekend and it looks like Newtown will definitely be on the list of places to be

straighten it!

I'd be tempted to wander over to Surry Hills via Erskineville and Alexandria rather than Redfern. Although if you're comfortable with blackfellas the Tent embassy is in The Block at the moment and is well worth a visit. Just don't walk in waving the camera, chat first. I got some reasonable shots in there at Rock the Block and have a few more from Tour of Beauty that I haven't put up yet.

I personally find the people in Newtwon pretty easy to photograph, but that may be because most of the older freaks know me. The still-at-school ones give me odd looks sometimes though. Camperdown Park can also be good for people, although a longer lens will make your life a lot easier.

If you started at Central and went through Prince Alfred Park then left onto that horrid main road and into the back of Surry Hells then up to Taylor Square I reckon you'd have killed a good four hours and should have some nice shots.

I've wandered around the CBD with a 300/4 around my neck, nobody says much about you, just some of them come and ask, "are you a photographer for xx magazine/news?" -- "what are you taking picture of"

Just act nicely and respond politely with a smile.. Even if they spotted you taken a picture of them, give them a big smile and walk off. :)

Woah, thanks moz that should keep me busy. I know a few of the still-at-school ones and they still give me odd looks because they're sick of the damn camera (I hope that's why).
