I just thought I would put a couple more up to see what you guys think of them.
Both done with the D50 and standard 18-55mm

Crits welcomed as always.

1. 1 1/2 sec - ISO 200 - F.22 - 18mm


2. 3 sec - ISO 200 - F.6.3 - 55mm

Just for the record. This ismage is absolutley untouched. It is a re-sized version of the Basic JPEG u get when u shoot in RAW/Basic. The skys were actually jet black like that!

Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I really like #1 here. Not only the perspective but also the use of selective colour. Nicely done. Only criticism is that the object (maybe a far off boat or buoy?) that seems to cross below the horizon just to the right of the boardwalk distracts me.

Both great shots, mate. I usually don't like shots with selective colour, but yours I do. The way the jetty leads you in and draws you to the red figure is well done.

The object is my mum in a red top (I got her to wear it so it would stick out.) I know what u mean about the size, but it is not too bad at a higher resolution (that image is only 399x600).
I Had never noticed that bouy before. Thanks for that. I'll clone it out.

This is my first post in this great forum. Just thought i'd post a yipee for #1 as it's fantastic. The textural contrast between the water (smooth) and the jetty (rough) is outstanding. It's a great composition.

I agree with others' opinions about the buoy. I'd also add that the jetty fragment to the left is also a distracting element in the picture.

Because the photo smacks of symmetry, broken only by the dog leg of the jetty (subject), i'd try adding a little more shoreline on the right-side where the shoreline intersects the edge of the photo. I.e to bring the darkness a little lower. It's slightly off balance with the left side as it is.

A superb photograph which i'd put up on my wall proudly without alteration!

Welcome to the site. I am a noob on this site too but welcome anyway.
I see what u mean with that dog leg at the end of the jetty. It has always annoyed me. I actually planned on doing another one when i borrow my mates 10-20mm Sigma (this was done with an 18mm) on a straight jetty. I also wanted to do one with a couple sitting at the end of it.

I think I may have written that in a confusing way. I actually believe the dog leg part of the jetty is a good juxtaposition and key to the success of this image. I've often found symmetrical photos with a slight asymmetric part interesting so you could say i'm biased.

For me the dog leg presents a spot for the eye to stop for a moment to take in what is at that depth (your mother) and contemplate what is going on.
