Getting the hang of extension tubes

Its been a little while since posting some pictures. I have no excuses its more aphathy than anything else!

Here are 3 pictures using the extension tubes. The rose is using the 50mm and heaps of extension, the other 2 are with 36mm extension and the kit lens.

Recent practice has resulted in me using the kit lens much more with the tubes. It seems to be infinately more user friendly in the outdoors!

Shots have no PP except minor cropping and uploading. There is probably a bit of noise in these pictures as I have been shooting ISO500 for the past few weeks  ... should remember when I put the ISO up!

Any C&C would be welcomed.

How close to the subject can you get with the tubes? I would like to try them one day.

With the 50mm and full extension (60 odd mm) you are almost right up against the front of the lens. From what I can gather if you use a shorter focal lengh lens then you are going to get very VERY close to the front of the lens the larger the extension you have.

If you use a 200mm lens you will get a better working distance but the reproduction ratio won't be as good.

I am not sure I have explained this very well, either way, get your kit lens and some extension tubes and you will be away!

If you are using heaps of extension, its best to use a lens reversing mount- you should obtain shaper photos this way, with the advantage of a greater working distance for a given magnification ;)

Love no.2 - I'd buy that!

I have a set of tubes on the way and can't wait to have a go myself!

Wow! Thanks everyone. I was pretty happy with them but I seem to develop a rather damaging sense of disatisfaction with all my pictures after a while.

The plan is to blow the rose one up onto a canvas, I will take some pictures when its done.

For those that are looking at getting extension tubes I cannot recommend the kit lens enough. It may not offer the peak of performance however I think that the results can be stunning, and it is SOOOOOO easy to work with.

I tried going a bit longer with the focal length and the results were no way near as consistent. The extra reach gives a wonderful range of working distances however the shutter speeds needed to get decent captures is just not worth the hassle. Add to the mix carrying around a 70-210 plus 68mm of extension and after an hour or so my arm was starting to ache!

I only managed 1 half decent shot:

I can only sharpen in Picasa which is why it is a little "overcooked"
