1st try in light painting

Was inspired by many cool photographs taken using a 'light paining' technique. So I grabbed my minimaglite and had a go yesterday night, here are the results:

Subjects and background are not really interesting, just having a try at this new technique learned. I adjusted the focus on the maglite so I can shine in some of the key parts of the lights I want and then open up wide and fill up the 'ambient' lights.

Settings: 50mm, 30"@f/16

C&C welcomed.

Probably not the best subject to show off the technique. These pix don't look too much different from a normal flash exposure IMO.

I'd try the light a little more narrowly focussed on the subject, and perhaps a little less exposure to give it a better look.

Practicing is fun, though - right? :D

Yi-P, you've got it all backwards. You have to mount the lens on the camera for those shots...

Seriously though, I think the big visible shadows destroy the lighting. With light painting, there isn't supposed to be a shadow. From what I've tried, and even more from what I've seen, I think this works best against a non-existant or far away backdrop. You just want to light up your subject, not make it cast a shadow.

Very nice lenses, though...

Cheers
Steffen.

have to agree, not really the subject for it.

set your camera up on the back porch at f22 or something and go paint the garden.

I do like the way the second lens seems to pop out of the picture. But these aren't the best subjects - give it a go on something a little more challenging (outside). Look forward to seeing your results. It's something I've never tried before, and will be interesting to see your progress over time :)

Thanks for all the comment + suggestions... :)

Will try sometime later when I have time with some other subjects and a better try on the lighting... but I dont have a back porch nor garden to paint with...
