Three shots from a plane

Couple of shots from the US Trip, different styles and effects.


The polarising filter through the plane window made a nice rainbow effect (this is somewhere around Cairns)


Las Vegas from the air a little after take-off. It really is a desert town, with the airport close to The Strip, along which all the big buildings are. Played with saturation and contrast to remove the effect of early morning haze/pollution.


For this shot and the one before it, I was seated directly behind the wing so really had to contort myself to shoot (and unfortunately the exhaust of the plane affects the top part of the shot). However I like this one of LA's raised freeways because the scale is kind of warped. It was taken just prior to landing.

C&C Welcome : it might be a little while before I'm in a plane again, but I'm hoping it's soon!

#3 is an interesting shot. I had to look very closely because at first I thought that it was a shot of a small scale model city that you had put in for a joke. It's amazing how unrealistic the city looks at that specific height.

It is a shame about the exhaust fumes - but not exactly something you can control

No. 3 does look like a small scale model. I like it.

Maybe you could also say the heat from the jet is art....

Wow... number 2 really puts things in perspective doesn't it?? I've not been to LA (or outside Aus for that matter)...and you hear about it being a desert area...but the photo really shows it in a way my mind couldn't have imagined.

Underload : Shot 2 is Las Vegas, Shot 3 is Los Angeles (the shots were taken on the same flight leg, though). Los Angeles is pretty massive - it's a huge sprawl, though it is surrounded by dry country and mountains for the most part (heading north by coast is San Francisco). Las Vegas, though, is definitely a desert town. It's weird to see how the backyards still manage to be well-irrigated in the rich areas!

To put things into perspective for you, LA his huge.

Consider that if you grab a rental car from LAX and then drive south on the freeway at a typical 70mph (nobody pays attention to the 65 mph speed limit on 405) it takes about an hour to get to the Laguna Niguel region in orange County, but you're still well within the general area that would be considered by many Aussies as being a part of LA.

The same is true of road trips heading east, north, or northwest from LAX. Do the math.

Now add to the the fact that within that broad area the population is roughly equivalent to that of the whole of Oz!

Vegas always looks better from the air, and the further away, the better it looks. If you get the impression that I don't like the place, you'd be right. Along with Whorelando in Florida, it's amongst the ugliest and tackiest places on this earth.

I like the shot of LA too, and I think the exhaust haze adds to, rather than detracts from, this image.

I still say San Bernardino is THE ugliest place on planet earth, yes, even ahead of Bakersfield...
