Another Lightening shot

I was out on the balcony the other night watching a beautiful light show make it's way across the city and managed to capture this just before the rain hit. :)

Image

I had to make two seperate exposures due to blown highlights caused by the bright lights on the old exhibition buildings. It's my first go at something like this but I think it worked out ok.

Any comments / advice would be greatly appreciated :).

A fine shot - even in the absence of the lightning. I particularly like the way the foreground interacts with the lightning. A clear high point in the general direction of where the lightning is headed. Colours are also unique in this image and at a guess it has benefited from your double exposure.

Nicely captured.

Far too modest. This is a brilliant image. As Craig has already said, even without the lightning this is a cracker shot. The lightning is the icing on the cake. I can't wait to see your next go at this. You've set yourself a high standard.

Thanks for sharing this.

I agree with those above and before me. It's a brilliant shot. I think that the style of the building and gardens really adds to the image. It would have less impact if it was a modern concrete building.

Great work.

Magic!

that's the kind of lightning shot I like. The lightning is not the only part of the photo, it complements it.

Well done,

cheers,

André

The lighting under the trees in the park make this a cracker shot. Great exposure, and the lightning makes is remarkable.

Wow, thanks for the kind comments everyone :D . It's been a while since I've posted here and it's great to be back!

Mixing the two exposures was a lot of fun. I think I've got the bug now!

Awesome shot. :D
Well done, you have got to be happy with that one. As BBJ says, print it big and hang it on your wall.

Thanks Pehpsi,

Actually after seeing your website I'm surprised you need to ask. Your gallery is full of brilliant shots that put mine to shame.

To cut a long story short I stood on the balcony with a giant metal rod and held it in the air when I wanted to take a shot... quick tip, the longer the metal rod the better the lightening shot ;).

Actually this shot is basically made up of two RAW exposures (well three actually - 3rd used for expanding dynamic range in the sky) which have been masked in photoshop and blended into a single shot. I put a fair bit of PP work into it since it's the first time I've tried one of these and I'm sure there's probably a much faster way of doing it.

Cheers,
Griffo.

Thanks Mic,
Jeez you got a good eye! I went back and checked it with the crop tool. It looks like there's a slight tilt of between 0.5 to 1 degree off vertical. Not sure if it's worth fixing. I might have another go this afternoon.
Cheers,
Griffo.
