As per my other post (Bronica), I was playing with the flashes to try to get some 'high key' type shots of my illy cups.

I would appreciate criticism on how I can improve the lighting set up.

Basically, the Metz was on the tripod pointing down on the cups (with a diffuser) and the SB800 was on camera (with diffuser).

I was trying both shallow and larger depth of field, although not sure which one I prefer.

C&C appreciated.





I took a bit of creative license with the last one by desaturating all but the middle red cup.

P - you need to counterbalance the shadows - less direct light to make them softer - dial down the power from the flash. Experiment - experiment - experiment

I like the idea. Agree with Chris about the shadows, and I think you could have a bit more depth of field to show off the designs on the cups as they are quite cool.

This is a bit off topic, but where can I get some cup likes that?

I found it hard to balance getting enough power from the Metz with trying to avoid those hard shadows.

Kris - I have bought a few cups from http://www.illy.com.au, but most have been from ebay. Most of the ebay cups come from Europe, so watch the postage. They can easily try to charge euro 40 to send a box of six cups to Australia. That can easily add AUD 70 to the cost of your cups.

nice cups and photos 1 and 2. like the shallow DOF. keeps you wondering what the others cups look like with detail on them...

yeah, i agree- the shadows are a bit strong for my likings.. maybe you could reduce the shadow in photoshop?

oh btw, what's the white surface? id say a matte surface of some sort?

I thought about photoshopping out the shadow, but due to laziness, decided against it.

The white surface is simply an old bed sheet.

Like Chris suggests... otherwise the only other advice I could possibly give is to bring those cups over to my place where they might photograph better ???

Michael, I tend to throw the cups out after I use them - they are disposable, aren't they?

ahh i see!
now if i had been more observant the first time around, i wouldve noticed in pic 3 that there is a curl in the bottom right corner which wouldve given it away haha

nevertheless, looks great!

I think my wife would kill me if I did throw them out, knowing how much I spent on them!

However, I did have the worst luck last year - I bought two illy cappuccino cups which I had planned to use on a daily basis, having used standard, $2 white cups for months previously. Within a week, I had broken one of the illy cups!
