Psaltoda harrisii (yellowbelly cicada) female emerging from her nymphal exuvidae (larval skin) - she hasn't coloured up yet, as she is still hardening up her exoskeleton, and the blue colouration is the colour of the haemolymph (insect blood) coursing through the veins, and pumping up the wings

So this has become Entomology lecture 2

I love viewing your posts and pics - this is certainly no exception.
I can't wait to show my niece and nephew this image, as they are yet to see a 'real' cicada, they love collecting their shells!! Thanks for sharing

Geoff - this is for your niece and nephew - this is a male of the same species (same night), but gives a half decent view of the top of the cicada

Awesome stuff Rel, we don't seem to get any Cicada where we live now, but when I was growing up the trees would be black with them, literally 1000's of them in our backyard, we'd even feed the bass the occasion sick/dying one...
