This is a 'predatory' mossie - Toxorhynchites sp - the larvae of this guy feeds on other mossie larvae :) In the adult form, this mosquito feed on nectar and plant sap - hence the beautiful curved proboscis (or mouth parts). And most of you should be able to tell now, but this is a male - huge feathery antennae - perfect to help him find a nice female to be 'friends' with ;)

Taken with extension tubes on the 105 nikon :)

Thanks guys :)

Alpha - are you coming over to the 'bug side' ???? :) LOL

and Kamran - your mossie shot is a cracker, so this doesn't beat it at all !!!! You had a harder shot to get, my mossie is HUGE !!!! :)

Mick,

If i am correct i think its only the Females that are the Blood Suckers, and also i think that they are the only ones to make that buzzing noise also... . :) Ill just leave it there i think, and resist the temptation to go any further. :)

ahhhh Rob - so close and yet sooooo far :(
This species doesn't suck blood at all - only feeding on plant sap and nectar, so your typically male stereoptypical view of the females of all species is far from reality ;)

I would still squash it if it flew in my direction.

Good use of the ext tubes her Rel, it is a corker of a shot.
