After my first lightening session at the start of the night where i was chasing lightening on the horizon and a late (2am night with bubs) i was woken at 4am by the sound of a bucket bashing around the front yard (that i had left lying around ) When i went ouside i saw that we were surrounded by a huge storm. So i quickly got dressed and headed just out of town.... Heres some of the results

Im gonna fire the R2400 up and print a couple of these bad boys what do you guys think of the lightening extending onto the canvas like this

My preference would be to print as per your posted shots - but hey you can print the way you prefer - or print it both ways (maybe smaller) and work out which you prefer as your final version.
Should look really good hanging on the wall.

Terrific efforts. So powerful and they are great stuff. I dont mind the frame with the lightning outside the box you created in the second version.

The only thing im a bit dissapointed about is the sharpness of the images....... im sure it's just because i wasn't focused perfectly.... Anyone have any tips for focusing in the dark?

I'm no expert on these types of shots Adam - but I would guess that if you had the focus at infinity and tried for more DOF by adjusting the aperture, to say F11, you would end up with more items in the field of view in focus.

Am I right here guys?

Yeah my thoughts exactly mick.....if i adjust the aperture to f11 id have had to have had the iso up alot higher.... easy come easy go i suppose..... im happy with them anyhow....... and they absorm mega amounts of sharpening wich is great because if i sharpen them up then look muc much better.

I like # 3 the best- no blown out clouds and lightning filling the frame a lot better. They do look a little soft though, as you say.
So, find your infinity focus in the daylight with the lens wide open, and note where it is, or even put a sticker on it and mark it. I find this necessary as the true infinity focus is not where its indicated in many lenses with my D70 or D200. Take a torch with you at night and set the lens to infinity manually and Bob's your uncle. As Oscar says, stopping down a bit more will help keep things in focus too.

I like them all, 1 and 3 in particular. I wouldn't be doing anything too tricky with the border, I think that would detract from the images. The recent bout of lightning pictures are making me wish I got out into the storms to take some pictures..
