I was lucky enough to be invited onto a friends 57 foot boat for New Years. I noticed when taking photo's on a boat of fireworks is:

a) boats move, making long exposures hard.
b) fireworks create ash, not good for the lens or the boat (had to was the boat when we got back to the marina @ 2am).

We found a nice spot in front of Garden Island and about 70m to the left of Fort Dennison. Perfect position to view the nights activities. Took us about 45 minutes to drop anchor as the 35km/h wind was blowing the boat making us drag the anchor. All the other larger boats were on the other side of the harbour out of the wind. The wind calmed down around 7pm making it very nice on the boat.

While the 9pm fireworks were in full swing, the tactical response team (with 6 crew) were having fun a full speed flying around the harbour. They were too fast for me to track and snap a picture of.

A small boat would be the best advantage spot to watch the fireworks from and the worst to take photographs. Or was it the champagne? :D
