Steve, why wait til you die. Go to your next local tournament and start taking the shots now. :)

Great shots John,

you also have some really good ones in your gallery. It is not easy to get the timing right.

Looks like you had a pretty good vantage point. Did you have press access?

Cheers,

André

Good stuff! Nice, big, close and right in your face! That's good photography! Bob Cappa said "if your images aren't good enough then your probably not close enough". You were close enough!

Thanks for the comments Andre and Matt.

Andre, not press access but a 400mm lens up close :) Also, one of the benefits of the Hobart tournament is that you can get within a couple metres of the court.

Matt, I'm starting to understand that comment now. I thought a 400mm lens was only for photographing things a long way away.
I'm now starting to understand the benefit of using it up close.

Cheers
John

Great work John. The close-ups really show how much effort those gorgeous girls put into their Aust open preparation :)

I like the first shot John.
It gives a nice feel of power about to happen.

Thanks for the comments Steve, Mick and Colin.
This is a whole new ball game (pun) for me, using a long lens to shoot up close to produce the tight cropped sports portrait style images. It's totally different from the sports shots I have done in the past which I've done from a lot further away.

I'll be back there tonight and tommorrow night but without camera :( . It just gets too crowded to shoot at the finals. No press pass, so can't get onto the court or other special places. I guess I'll have to be satisfied with enjoying watching.

Cheers
John
