I've been struggling to get really sharp images with my 50mm f/1.8, so after testing for front or back focus issues and coming up with nothing, I decided to see how it performs on a tripod, using the onboard flash ...

Two shots of the extraction, and a cappuccino from this morning with a bit of crappy mucking around with PP. C & C welcome! Please!







The cappuccino pic was taken handheld, with no flash, but decent overhead light, as well as sunshine through the window behind me.

Oh, the other lesson: clean the underside of the grouphead (espresso machine bit) before taking photos!!!

Can you move the peice of apparatus in the foreground out of the way?
It bugs me somewhat.

umm ... do you mean the cup at the bottom of the images? or the handle of the portafilter at the top of the images?

It took me a little bit to figure out what you were talking about ... latte art! It's a bit of fun. It's all in the way you pour the milk.

actually, I find latte art easier than photoshop! But then, I've only ever used a trial version of Elements, so I guess I can't really know that for sure.

For your latte art, I would have the cup on a plate and possibly look at a white background. Maybe a bit more DOF so we don't lose too much of the art in the oof area.

Seriously, the cappuccino looks great, although the extraction looks like there is a flat spot towards the back!

Doubt it, looks like a Starbucks cup plus GJ doesn't use real cups

damn you, coffeegeek!

actually, the dead spot was in the centre. the first pic was a second or two earlier in the shot (I took about 11 pics of the one shot), and there was a stream coming out the back there. It was a very drippy shot until about the last 3-4 seconds.

but I'm despising the e61 grouphead at the moment; it's set so low that it's hard to get my dose spot on. This shot was updosed just a touch too much. The next shot was even worse!

So you're not denying the Gloria Jeans bit then?

My shots have been a bit hit and miss of late as well.

Everything bad that people say about GJ's coffee is true.

Who says anything bad about GJs? I won't stand for it.
