These are all from Tuesday down at the Sydney int. at Homebush .Great venue to watch tennis .
The Mauresmo shot is cropped .The others are pretty much as is out of the gun . 70-200 f2.8 @200 .
Minor curves bend and levels adjust and some USM .
Finding the lack of auto focus points a bit restricting on the 20D lately.
Sun was all over the shop blistering one minute cloudy the next .

C and C welcome

Tony, the Mauresmo shot is the one for me. With the muscle definition and the racket and ball distorting at the point of impact.
Top shot.
Cheers
John

Maria didn't play in Sydney and Daniela got knocked out in the first round .
Got plenty of Dani last year though. :)

Great action shots.

Does anyone have an opinion on what is the lowest shutter speed to freeze action? Several people I know dont use anything over 1/1000 unless they have to - citing it makes no real end photo difference.

Tony that first link of Daniela Hantuchova is very nice indeed. Tennis certainly sculpts the perfect form if any sport does!

I think 1/1000 will stop most human action, but maybe not completely freeze a tennis ball in motion. I suppose you also have to factor in what DOF is required for your shot, as this will be relevant to final shutter speed.

These shots are very good, but I tend to prefer to see evidence of action in action shots, otherwise some of them look as if they could have been posed (not referring to these ones BTW).

I can't help but wonder, though, whether the Kimmy shot or the Nadal shot would have been slightly improved if the tennis ball was elongated or blurred to illustrate motion. Then the viewer knows whether the pic was taken before the player made the shot or afterwards. This may have been the outcome with a shutter speed of about 1/1000. :D

In tennis shots i like the ball frozen (just a personal preference)as the blurred ball usually just stands out (in a bad way) . I even upped the ISO on a few to increase the shutter speed .(Just for kicks , i wanted a few shots at maximum revs .1/8000 . Usually the muscles ,facial expressions ,and body extensions let the viewer know that there is motion going on in tennis. As cricketfan alluded the DOF was the shutter dictator.
1/800 is as slow as i'd go as around the hands and racquet things start getting blurred .(Once again in a bad way. IMHO )
