C&C are what i am after, so any that will help me improve my technique are most welcome! also why do all the images i take in v-low light situations with my 50mm 1.4 end up yellow/orange. is it because of the yellowish/orange of the light bulbs? theses shots were off the cuff, totally unplanned, with tripod.

They are fairly dark on my monitor, but I think thats what you were after?

The light appears yellow/orange because thats the colour/temperture of the light comng out your typical incandescent light bulb. Obviously, the shorter the exposure, the darker this will appear.

If you shoot RAW you can play about with the light temperture settings.

Yeah i did, not on purpose (auto ISO).

I wasnt going for the dark look. all i did was aim the camera on the tripod and hit the shutter release.
just turned out a nice moody shot.

Yellow/orange cast would be due to the lights and your white balance. You can use a cyan or blue filter over your light to cancel some of it out or shoot raw and fix it in post. Another option is to use a custom or tugsten camera white balance setting.

How is the white balance in this?

Prefer the 3rd crop as well but don't mind the orange ambience - gives it more of a romantic feel to the pic. Did you try b&w?

For the greyscale image, I would be inclined to reduce the brightness a tad and increase the contrast. It brings out the detail very slightly, while maintaining the 'mood'.

Your GF looks sad in the image also (IMHO).

I don't mind #2. Just a bit more off from the right.
