What ever happened to don't judge a book by its cover, does it really matter that he's got a non "pro" camera? Or is this forum that superficial that everyone needs a Nikon D2X

Agreed. And doesn't that pentax have a similar/if not the same sensor as Leigh's D70?

Agree with wojtek, we keep saying it's not the equipment but the user. Unless your at a race track it would appear....

The person behind the camera is the one who makes the images, but the camera equipment plays its part and it's a gross simplification to say that it's the person not the gear!

I must say my first reaction when I saw that Pentax body was to recognise that it was a DL/DS body and think that it was unusual gear to use in that situation...

It IS the person making the images, absolutely... but when you're in a professional photographer capacity, the look is quite important.

... not to mention having equipment that is engineered to an appropriate standard, whereby you can utterly depend on it to deliver results. This is a particularly salient point when your income and reputation are on the line.

Some of these guys were probably shooting for AP/Getty/Reuters and had their images syndicated world-wide. While ol mate Pentax probably could have the same results, if you were out there in a professional capacity day-in day-out, why wouldn't you choose professional level tools for your profession?

Interesting process here. Leigh clearly isn't a gear freak, normally using a D70 and manual 45P. He was criticised on another thread because the cars were soft, most likely a limitation of his equpment due to focussing issues.

I would suggest for this type of photography that a high frame rate and good focussing for fast target acquisition would be the best choice. Something like a D2H would be ideal. It seems to me that Leigh's surprise is at that unit is in the pro area. I also have that surprise, until recently Getty had a 15mp requirement for submitted images, even the D2X didn't meet it. That has been relaxed now, as per here, but the two minimum cameras are 30D or D200. Submission on a Pentax are not accepted! Getty are a pretty good standard of pro requirements and naturally are accredited at all major events. This may explain Leighs surprise at that camera in a pro area, not if the unit is capable of doing the job (which it certainly is).
