I was at a campaign presentation the other day and they had carefully arranged things so that the only decent shot of him talking required me to levitate above the heads of the audience in front of him. The two angles I could get are these, then the stage setup to give you ideas:


Neither really appeal. The media photog was using the second one with a (Nikon) 70-200, but where she was standing gave the ugly proscenium pillar behind his head. Any suggestions?

I take my angle of attack based on my lighting.

If I only had the natural light, camera left, I'd shoot from the left, as per your #1.

If I had a flash, I might try to bounce off the ceiling, and shoot from position 2, right side of stage.

position in #1 is preferred, for two reasons, I like the burgundy backdrop, and the natural light islarge, probably a window. The downside is the lecturn in the way, but frame in closer.

I think a flash would be great in either, probably shot at 45 degrees to get the distance, and bounce.

I was using the flash to remove some shadows from faces, but bounce was pretty much out of the question - the ceiling height in there is at least 7 metres (there's a balcony at the rear of the hall). I did end up preferring the left side of the hall - most of my shots were from that side.
