Lovely, love the shells and here we see the animal in its natural element.
How deep was this guy swimming ?

Only semi-natural.
It was collected in a trap laid at 300m and brought to the surface for weighing and other stats. The shot was taken off the back of the boat just before it was released back into the wild.

For me the first image here has more impact because we see more of the shell side on. In #2 the side is more in shadow. In both shots there is a cyan tinge in the shadows (more noticeable in #2) and I wonder if there isn't a slight colour adjustment needed in the shadows to bump the red slightly.

These used to get washed up on KingIsland quite regularly but I have never seen them alive like this before!

I like both, though a portion of me would like to increase contrast just a bit. Are the colours representative of what you saw?

Now that I have my monitor calibrated properly (thanks DaveB), I can see the cyan tinge. I'll see if I can remove it.
The colours of the shell and the animal itself are very close to how they appear in nature - at least when out of the water in sunlight. Underwater, everything looks blue.

The reworks really pop, and make it feel more like a deep dive (since the water is so dark). The colours appear more natural, and I can't detect a Cyan cast. Well done!

Great rework on these
My preference goes against most here by the looks of it, as I like the 2nd one most - I like the depth that comes out in it rather than the straight-on view. Balance between colour and exposure is just right, and the black background makes the whole thing sing

Love the first pic. Shows greater detail in the shell and more of its profile. Lighting is pretty much spot on as well.

Thanks for the comments.
I do realise that underwater photography is a bit "different", but the result can either be pleasing or not just like any other photograph. The sort of comments posted here have been very helpful in this instance and should also help in others.
As with any other C&C, don't be afraid to say what you think, even if it may not be possible for me to change because of the underwater challenges. I don't hold a grudge - well not for long.
